Mo Tzu Questions
1. Would Mo Tzu be saying the same thing about music today? He states music is a “luxury” and expensive, but it is far less expensive to enjoy today.
2. Mo Tzu talks about how the king needs someone to chime his bell, the description of a young man with keen eyes and ears, as well as strong arms. He also said this person would be taken away from his normal job to provide the task for the king. Wouldn’t the person be paid for his duties for the king?
3. Did Mo Tzu grow up in a poor, less fortunate home where music was hard to come by? Would he be saying the same things if he had been born into family prosperity?

1. Would Mo Tzu say all of the things that he said if he were in a position of great wealth?
2. When he speaks directly against music, I wonder if he took into account the fact that music may not fix any of the problems but it allows people to remove themselves from their surroundings for a short while and relax in the music, getting away from their everyday troubles.

After reading Mo Tzu I was left with many questions but since two will suffice, here they are:
1.) Was Mo Tzu saying that distractions in general were what should be abolished?
2.) What would happen in society if there was a prohibition on the arts?

Questions/Mo Tzu
1) Who says people have to neglect their duties to listen to music and enjoy the festivities? Some people are more efficient than others and can sqeeze in some entertainment at the end of the day.
2) It seems that Mo Tzu blaims everything “bad” or negative on music–is the music really the problem? Or is it the people? It just seems to me that there are probably lots of other factors effecting the situations.

Questions about Mo Tzu Text
1. What about music playing or singing in churches? Is Mo Tzu saying that this kind of music should not be allowed either, when it is for good to worship the lord? I do not think heaven would frown upon this and therefore music is not wrong.
2. Mo Tzu seems to have something against rulers or ministers. If rulers and ministers worked to create their own music, would Mo Tzu say that music may be ok then? Because this would be fair for the public and the public would not have to work hard wasting time to create music for rulers. So why should music not be allowed then?
